Simple Spring Centerpiece

Hey all!   I kid you not, I have been thinking about this simple spring centerpiece for over a year!  Last year Target started carrying cute cake plates in the Dollar Spot.  Like any normal human being I started hoarding ALL THE CAKE PLATES.  Totally normal right ?  Well,  when they are only $5, $3, and $1,  it made it a little easier to go a little crazy.  Over the course of the summer I slowly accumulated a small stash that would make Matt Paxton do a double take.

Anyways,  I may have over estimated how many of these little babies I needed… by like 23,  but who’s counting. I digress…  I had an epiphany as  I was unloading my haul from my Target bag…  I had simply unloaded  the cake plates onto the table until I could put them in their proper homes. But as I was preparing to put them away, I realized they looked beautiful AS-IS.  They were all clustered together on my table, and that’s when the “lightening struck my brain”. (10 pts. If you can name that movie.)  THIS happy accident would be my next spring centerpiece/ tablescape!

So without further ado…  I give you my completely impractical,  but totally gush-worthy spring centerpiece!

Spring Cake Plate Centerpiece

As I said,  this look simply  required repetition.  It was a very simple concept that I kept repeating.  I loved all the cake plates alone, but I wanted to add something simple that would create a little contrast…

Confession,  my hoarding issues is not limited to cake plates… I also like little ornate glass bottles,  so I pulled out my arsenal of  bottles and started staggering them through out the cake plates. All it needed was a small sprig of color and this arrangement was complete!

Once the centerpiece was complete I moved onto the actual place settings. I wanted it to also be simple,  so I AGAIN, simply  repeated elements.  I placed the same bottles, and sprigs and tied a  small homemade place setting card to it. Cost? $0.00.  Booyah.

There you have it, a beautiful tables-cape that is simple,  but based solely on repetition it gains the “Wow!” factor.

There you have it folks, a simple design that can easily  be adapted to any season or setting! Can’t you just see it with Holly Sprigs, or sprays of wheat for fall?  Seriously,  the possibilities are endless! So make sure you pin it and save it for later!

Take Luck,

Corey

P.S. If you love this table-scape you will love what I did last spring!  You can check it out here.

holiday-home-tour-2-by-sawdust-2-stitches Alright you guys,  here it is… the moment I have been prepping for since Halloween day! (Yeah, you read right.)  The day I get to show you my  2016 Christmas Tree!   Don’t you worry,  I have plenty more pictures of the whole house coming tomorrow, but today I am showing off my tree!  holiday-home-tour-5-by-sawdust2stitches-comThis year I really gravitated towards more natural elements. One of the most prominent,  being grapevine!  I  used grapevine balls as large ornaments, and grapevine as a garland! ( I used one strand, and it will run you  about $10ish or less if you use a coupon at most craft stores. rustic-christmas-tree-2-by-sawdust2stitches-com  If  you are unfamiliar with Grapevine,  it often comes in a spool resembling a grapevine wreath.

img_4284ed You can add garland one of two ways; you can either leave it in long sections and press into the tree and work around it while add the remainder of your ornaments. Or you can try this!   I cut my grapevine into small manageable sections.

img_4341 Then I do this!

Look at how much character and dimension it adds to the tree! rustic-christmas-tree-by-sawdust-2-stitches

One other trick I have decided I love, is layering my ribbon!  It adds just a little more pizzaz to a traditional ribbon. After which, I add red berries.  Lots and lots of red berries! holiday-home-tour-christmas-tree-by-sawdust-2-stitches-com

Shhh… I am giving you just a small sneak peak  for tomorrows post, my Holiday Home Tour 2016!  Tune in tomorrow!holiday-home-tour-sawdust-2-stitches

I grew up in Ohio,  I remember curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book. It was one of my favorite things to do… ( I WAS *cough* a total nerd:).   I have since moved to Florida where fireplaces are scarce, and are not really practical. Well,  just because I don’t have a fireplace doesn’t mean I need to miss out on decorating a festive mantle!  In lieu of a mantle, I “decked” the shelves!

If you are looking for more seasonal inspiration. Make sure you  check some of my favorite blogger buddies, they have plenty of great ideas on how to “deck the halls” this holiday season!

Blank Canvas

I have a floating shelf that is mounted above the television in our living room.  It was my perfect canvas to create holiday magic! ( If you are interested to see how I turned an Ikea Shelf into a rustic ledge  you should check out this tutorial! )

Christmas Mantle 1 by sawdust 2 stitches

“Gifts” ie. Cardboard Boxes

When staging a shelf, I always start by placing my largest items.  In this case, I used large boxes wrapped as gifts.

Mercury Glass

Next, I wanted to add a new texture and a bit of glam.  I used vases from a thrift store, and turned them into mercury glass.

Mercury glass is pretty simple to make!  Just use “Looking Glass” spray paint (no other kind will work).  Spray it into your container. Next use a spray bottle containing 1:1 ratio of vinegar and water.  LIGHTLY spritz the inside of the container with the mixture. Directly after use a hairdryer and dry the inside. If the paint and liquid are settling on the bottom, slowly turn the container as you dry it.  It  creates this beautiful aged patina on the inside of any glass container!

A few years ago we upgraded our Christmas tree. Instead of getting rid of the old one, I dismantled it, and now use the greens for decorating.

Grapevine Balls

I wanted to add another texture, and the grapevine balls were the perfect addition! ( you cab get them at a lot of craft stores in the floral department)

Candles and Magnolia Leaves

I next added a few white candles from the Dollar Tree! It added just a little bit of color contrast I was looking for. The finishing touch was adding a few magnolia leaves.  I have magnolia leaves as a common theme throughout the rest of my Christmas decor, this tied my mantle in perfectly!

800x 400

There you have it folks, a quick and easy approach to a rustic “mantle makeover”!  A big shout out and “thank you” to our  lovely and talented host Jen from House of Wood!

DIY tiered planter sawdust 2 stitches   When we first moved into our house, I was at a loss with what to do with our front entry.  It was too small to put any thing large, but  big enough that it looked funny with out SOMETHING?!

I was stubborn and thought surely I can fit in  some seating…  Yeah, that was a bust.  As a result I ended up with a lot of scrap 1×3’s.  Well,  ‘When life gives you lemons… stick em’ down your shirt and make your boobs look bigger.”  or…   take the scrap and build it into these awesome  planters!

front porch makeover with planters Sawdust 2 StitchesIf you want to learn more about the floor transformation, you can see how I did it here:   Patio Floor Makeover

Materials Used:

  • 1×3″ s
  • 1×2″
  • Heavy Duty Landscaping Material
  • Exterior Use Stain
  • 1 1/4″  Wood Screws
  •  Weather resistant Wood Glue

Tools Suggested:

  •  Miter Saw
  • Drill
  • 1/8″  Drill Bit
  • Level
  • Staple Gun

Cut List: ( For ONE tiered planter)

1×3″ Boards

  • 33 @  16″
  • 24 @  12″
  • 2   @   13″
  • 2   @   24″
  • 4   @   35″

1×2″Board

  • 6  @    10.5″

To speed up the assembly process,  cut all boards, sand and if desired  stain all boards.  Once dry,  you can begin the assembly process.   When assembling ,  I would strongly  suggest  pre-drilling all joints for screws, to avoid the wood splitting.  If you  prefer using a nail gun,  use 2″ nails and  as an added precaution use a weatherproof wood glue.

Tiered planter sawdust2stitches 32

Tiered planter Sawdust2stitches 42

Tiered planter Sawdust2stitches 6 Tiered planter Sawdust 2 stitches 7 To line the planters,  I used a heavy duty landscaping material.  I would guess you could use another form of material,  but that is what I used.

Cut 3  rectangles approximately 22″x 27″,  push  the material into the individual planter boxes. Make sure the material  covers the bottom and the interior sides of the planter. Then  use a  heavy duty stapler to staple the material  so that it stays in place .

Then fill er’ up!   Soil, plants, water, sun, you know the routine!

 Take Luck,

Corey
