I was recently getting my home all decked out in Fall decor…   My house changes regularly, which presents a small snag when I put up seasonal decor , not everything fits where it use to! Well, I had a vacant spot on my  front entry shelf.  (You can get all the DIY details here.)

There was only one thing to be done.  It needed a customized  “Fall Themed”  chalkboard sign. (Obviously).

Materials Suggested:

  • 1/4″ paneling
  • flat black paint
  • 1/2″ board
  • White Colored pencil (prismacolor)
  • OR  white permanent chalkboard marker
  • Stain

Tools  I Used:

  •  Table Saw
  • Nail gun

Ok, so this is just a simple walk-through of what I did. I am sorry it is not a printable… I am not that good.  Anyways, I used a piece of cheap MDF paneling and painted it with FLAT black paint.  I then proceeded to add the design to my board.

I used “prisma color” white colored pencil, and a “permanent chalk marker”.  (With all of the chalkboard rage, it seems that craft suppliers have addressed the needs for more chalk writing utensils, check at your local craft store, they are everywhere.)

If you are not the  free-handing type,  consider  using a free printable,  or designing your sign on a free service like Picmonkey.  Then  simply use transfer paper, and then trace with the white. Easy Peasy.

Here is the design I chose to do :

To really  make my sign pop, I added a rustic wooden frame.  This is a quick and easy frame.   I used a 1×2″ board and cut out a small lip on one side. (See image below)

I then measured out the size of my board and cut my 1×2’s to fit the dimensions. I cut the ends on 45 degree angles in order to create mitered corners. Make your own fall chalkboard sign sawdust2stitches.com

I simply  put a dab of glue on the face of the 45 degree cut, and then tacked it in place using a finish nailer. make your own fall sign www.sawdust2stitches.com

I  then added a quick coat of stain…

Lastly, I added a small amount of wood glue to the back edge of the sign and then pressed it into place.

Voila.  All done.

I am by no means an anti-Thanksgiving nut,  but I do have a hard time “decorating” for it.  If I am being honest with myself, I know I will not make it until after Thanksgiving to put up my Christmas tree. ( I know, I know,  say what you want,  but it takes a lot of work to get all those decorations up and I want to enjoy it!  It doesn’t make me enjoy or celebrate Thanksgiving any less.)
So instead of putting up more decorations for Thanksgiving,  I just take  down some of the Halloween!  Genius.
So there you have it folks, a five minute transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving.  What could make this better?  It is free!
Now to start preparations for my  little Winter Wonderland.

I have never really decorated for Halloween before.  My kids are now starting to really enjoy ALL holidays. Honestly, I only started decorating because I felt like a bad Mom.  So,  I started trolling pinterest for ideas, and found quite a few! Here are some of them…

This is  a quick and easy festive makeover.   I found all the pumpkins at the Dollar Tree ! They just needed a little bit of a makeover, (they were the most horrid neon orange color).    A few coats of spray paint quickly changed that.
The same goes for the candlesticks.  I had some leftover candlesticks and I  gave them a  facelift  with some black spray paint.
I happened to find paper mache’ witch hats at Michaels for $1.25 a piece!  The finishing touch  was the black  fabric,  also another Dollar Tree  find.
All in all,  I did all the  shelf Halloween decorations for under $16.00!
Does  spray paint seem a little overly ambitious ?  Then might I suggest  this next project ?
bats close up  bats far away
This is a very CHEAP and very EASY  Halloween decoration.  I actually  drew my inspiration from a pin on Pinterest, I believe I saw it  here first.
You can do this for the cost of black construction paper!

Don’t  love bats ?  Well, how about a ghost ?

This is one of my favorite  new decorations.  Is this not the cutest little ghost ever !?  This was also a pinterest craft,  you can see a full tutorial here.
This next decorative feature requires no prep work at all!
Candy corn + glass jars + candles =Super easy and cute decor.

I added this sign to my  festive decorations this year.  Honestly it was a pain in the butt.  I really don’t have any words of wisdom for those who want to give it a try.  I did it the old fashion way,  drew out the design on a piece of paneling.   After drawn.  I used painters tape to fill in the letters,  after taped,  I painted over the tape.  It wasn’t  really  quick and easy,  but,  nonetheless,  it is a  Halloween decoration, and  I LOVE  the way it turned out.DSC_5646 (2)

I know this isn’t exactly a tutorial, but  hopefully  you got a little inspiration.  Thanks for reading, and hope you have a Happy  Halloween! I have two little boys that are very excited about the holiday,  and I have two adorable costumes for them to wear.  I am excited to show their costumes soon!
